Why Sigma Gamma Rho?
As the only sorority in the NPHC founded at a predominantly white university, Sigma Gamma Rho has distinguished itself as an organization with true focus on equity and opportunity. Our founders worked against members of the KKK (who were active just minutes away from their campus!) to build a legacy that stands upon resilience, determination, and service to the community. Once you become a member, you’re in for life! We cherish the bond of sisterhood and are eager to help each other develop. And just an added bonus: everyone looks great in gold!
How can I become a member?
We recommend doing a bit of research before you decide you want to join Sigma Gamma Rho. Start by visiting our national website to familiarize yourself with our mission and programs, and take it a step further by getting to know the current chapter. We’re more than happy to answer questions, so please contact us if you would like to meet in person to talk! (We won’t know you’re interested unless you tell us, so if you’d like to meet casually for reasons unrelated to membership that’s perfectly okay!) Freshmen must complete twelve units before being considered, but transfer students are eligible immediately upon arrival at USC. All aspirants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and be in good standing with the university.
I’m not black. Can I still join?
Despite our origins as a historically black organization, we do accept aspirants of diverse backgrounds. Our chapter members past and present represent a wide variety of communities, and we are happy to provide an inclusive environment for all women who share our values.
I heard you’re not supposed say anything if you’re interested in joining. What do I do?
“Discretion” is a term that gets thrown around a lot with regards to organizations in the National Pan-Hellenic Council. It just means that you should only discuss your interest with the members of the organization you wish to join. Please ask us questions directly so that we can provide you with the best answer, and do tell us if you’re interested so we can guide you on next steps! In general, it’s good to keep in mind that discussing your plans or ideas prematurely with people who do not have a direct connection to the information you’re sharing can cause stress and confusion for everyone involved!
I’m a graduate student. Are there options for me?
Yes! The Theta Epsilon chapter is strictly reserved for undergraduates attending USC, but we have several alumnae chapters that accept aspirants who have already completed collegiate education. Please contact us for a referral to a chapter near you.
GREEK LIFE
What is the NPHC?
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a conglomerate of historically black fraternal organizations that promote fellowship, service, and scholarship through their respective programs. Also known as the “Divine Nine”, the NPHC includes: Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta fraternities, incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho sororities, incorporated.
I haven’t seen you on the row. What’s up with that?
We do not have an official campus sorority house.
Do you collaborate with the other organizations on campus?
Yes! As members of the Greek community, we do work together to host events for everyone on campus. That collaboration extends past the NPHC to include members of other Greek councils. Joining a Greek organization is a great way to make connections!
